Have you ever had root canal therapy? Has your root canal therapy been unsuccessful in the past? Here at Rockland Endodontics, our Rockland County endodontist has helped many patients who have received unsuccessful root canal treatments elsewhere with our endodontic retreatments. Firstly, it is important to understand how root canal therapy works in the first place in order to understand why endodontic retreatment might be necessary. Our Rockland County endodontist recommends root canal therapy for a patient in the first place if they have a tooth in which the pulp is infected. The pulp is a collection of soft tissue located at the center of each of your teeth. If the pulp becomes exposed due to decay, a crack in the tooth, or other similar reasons, the bacteria in your mouth can then infect in, putting your tooth in serious jeopardy, and also creating uncomfortable symptoms like toothache and sensitivity.
The first root canal treatment works to correct this problem in that it involves removing the infected pulp, carefully cleaning and sterilizing the area, and then sealing the tooth up to prevent another infection in the future. Unfortunately, in some cases re-infection does occur. If the tooth does become infected again, then our Rockland County endodontist will need to perform an endodontic retreatment in order to preserve the tooth. An endodontic retreatment is essentially the same process as the original root canal treatment, except instead of removing an infected pulp, our Rockland County endodontist will remove the filling material from the original root canal treatment and replace it. Endodontic retreatment has a very high success rate, especially when you are in the capable hands of our Rockland County endodontist here at Rockland Endodontics.
